LATEXiT + Pages
&t![]()
As we saw in a previous post, LATEXiT can be used to place professionally typesetted equations in Apple’s Keynote. In fact, LATEXiT has an even better integration with Apple’s Pages word processing application. Continue reading for a demonstration of what you can do with LATEXiT and Pages…
Although LATEX can be used to produce excellent documents (it’s not just used to produce equations!), some people may still feel daunted by producing a full document using it. However, with the use of LAEXiT (note this also requires LATEX itself to be installed), equations can be produced and placed into a Pages document, thus allowing people to benefit from well typesetted equations, but not be forced to learn how to produce a full LATEX document. While writing a document in Pages, you can simply write out an equation, select it, and then press command and period/full stop (
+ .) and the equation becomes LATEX-ified as illustrated in our images! (This is invoking the LATEXiT service).

These equations are small PDF images and so you can use Pages to apply shadows and opacity to them if you wish. If you change you mind about an equation you can press the standard undo button in Pages and go back the LATEX source code.
LATEX can produce much more than these simple equations, so you are very unlikely to find yourself in a situation where you want to represent mathematics that LATEX can’t handle. This makes Pages very attractive for producing quick professional looking documents.
Update: To perfectly align your LATEXiT equation with your text, see this quick fix.

Everybody say that the best way to insert math equation in pages is to use latexit. However, and it is shown in the previous screenshots, the equation is upper than the baseline text, and I don’t find a way to align the equation with the rest of the text (which is automaticaly done with equation editor and apple works). Do you have a solution ?

Thanks for the question Fabien, Pages.app has the solution to your problem. When you have the LaTeX equation embedded inside your pages document, click on the image and then go to the “Wrap” section in the inspector panel. Currently it will be set to “Moves with text”. Set it instead to “Fixed on page” and also select “Object causes wrap” and select the wrapping style that is second from the left. Finally set the “Extra space” value to 0 or maybe 1 pt, depending on your preference.
I will update the post with this information and with some screenshots if there is any confusion and for the benefit of anyone else with this problem.
